The trio – Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power – flew into Dublin yesterday to make the special announcement and said it would be a “monumental” occasion for them and their families. The gig would be their biggest ever headline show, they added.

The Dublin natives will be supported on the night by Pharell Williams, and said that they delayed announcing the Croke Park date as they wanted to “secure a special guest”.

They have previously appeared on the coveted Croke Park stage supporting U2 and Take That.

It is understood that Irish acts Kodaline and Hozier will also provide support on the night, and tickets will go on sale next Thursday morning.

The Script said they are not nervous about selling out the 82,000 seat stadium, and joked that they will ask Garth Brooks for advice, who controversially cancelled five scheduled concerts this year over licensing issues.

“I think we are more nervous about the weather,” Mark Sheehan said. “I think with Bono being able to call Bill Clinton on the phone every night, we are going to try and call Garth Brooks.”

The group said that they always dreamed of playing a headline gig there and would consider it to be a measure of their success, as well as being “another thing off the bucket list”.

Danny added: “It’s one of those things, you know when you are growing up in Ireland and you are in a band, your dream is to play the Sugar Club. And then the Aviva. And the next one that is across the way you are looking at is obviously this big beast here.”

Will you be attending? :)
